VINEYARDS
|
Some of the best wines in the world are produced in the Mosel Valley. The steep, south facing slopes (a few are the steepest in Europe) maximise the use of the sun during the summer and autumn months. The river also plays an important role, reflecting the rays up the slope towards the vines. However, it´s not just the sun which produces the good grape. The slate soil has an important role to play, holding in the heat of the sun and providing important natural minerals. The soil also holds organic and amino acids.

We grow the following vines on our slopes:
Riesling This variety of vine is considered one of the world´s best, producing some of the tastiest dry and sweet wines for the bottle. For centuries German Riesling wines were prized along with the great red wines of France. Unfortunately, the recent mass export of cheap sweet wines has damaged the reputation of this fine grape. However, there is a ressurgence of Riesling wine as more and more re-discover the special qualities this vine produces. A great many of the most admired Rieslings are made in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region.

Weißer Burgunder Also known as Pinot Blanc. This produces a light, dry white wine without the acidity of the Riesling. It´s a very mild white which is perfect on it´s own or with most dishes. It has been unfairly referred to as the `poor man´s Chardonnay´, which fails to neglect the very special aroma and taste this grape can produce. Blauer Spätburgunder Also known as Pinot Noir. This vine produces a high quality red wine with a good ageing potential. We make a light dry red wine and a Rose.
